Today was lived in two phases,
doing battle with the lawn, and seeing Van Helsing. Early this
morning I ventured out seeking materials to repair the lawn mower. I needed air filters, spark plugs, oil, oil pan, and
gasket makers. After an aborted trip to Wal-Mart I found what
I was looking for at Lowes. I have no idea why I went to
Wal-Mart on a Sunday... I should have predicted that I'd get fifty
percent of what I needed only to be presented with a twenty cart
checkout line. Grrr... After that, I fixed the Snapper
and mowed both the back and front yards! My fixes worked
swimmingly and I think I've finally figured out the problem with the
carburetor. But enough of that boring crap, the real event of
the day was Van Helsing! What a great movie! I expected
it to suck, and man I loved it. I'm working on a separate
review page for it, but I might not finish it tonight since I'm
not even fully sure I can explain all of the reasons I liked
it. I'll hammer it out over the next few days. Do
yourself a favor and check it out ASAP! |

The Freak Engine show last night
was great! The guys invited another group called the Wise Guys
to perform with them and it was interesting to see their different
take on standard improv games, plus some new ones I hadn't seen
before. I thought that the one called "Slide Show"
came off best. It consisted of two guys describing their trip
to France while the rest of the troupe acted out their travel
photos. At one point it looked as though the picture was taken
outside plane on the ride home. You could see the passengers
through the small windows, and someone said, "Look there's a
troll on the wing!" Reminded me of Nightmare at 20,000
Feet, that Shatner
Twilight Zone episode.

ALL-RUSH Month continues!
On my commute today I finished off Caress of Steel, 2112, and got
halfway through All The World's A Stage! Yes, there was a lot
of traffic!! Comic-run today yielded a good crop, with
Ultimate Spider-Man, Y The Last Man, Captain America & Falcon,
and a DCU 100 page Super-Spectacular. I'll post a new weekly
review tomorrow evening. Chatted on AIM with my good buddy and
ex-roommate, Brian Prater... the infamous
"Patchcat." For those of you who don't have it, I
highly recommend trillian,
which is a multi flavor instant messaging application that works
with AIM, Yahoo, MSN, IRC, and ICQ. George Huff got the boot
on American Idol tonight... which bums me out. I never thought
he'd win, but he was cool. Sniff Sniff. |

What is more nightmarish?
Barbara Streisand singing Cher songs, or Cher singing Barbara
Streisand songs? Perhaps Celine Dion singing a Cher/Streisand
medley? On a lighter note, ALL-RUSH Month is in full swing and
I have determined that a one way drive to/from work equals 3/4 of a
Rush album. I'm on the last song of Caress of Steel,... which,
although I love all things Rush, is pretty much a dog. I mean,
Bastille Day rocks hard, and I Think I'm Going Bald is groovy,...
but I don't really care much for The Necromancer. And why is
Prince By-Tor a good guy all of a sudden anyway? Last album he
was the "Devil's Prince," now he's the traveler's
savior? What gives? Anyway... tomorrow is 2112 day, so
it's all good. |

Today, Kimberly, Steve, and I
hung out at my brother's house for a little while and took pictures
of my niece Allison's 6th birthday party luau. On the way, we
picked up a 128meg smart media card for Kimberly's digital camera,
and boom... the thing went from about a 15 picture capacity to over
800 pictures, and that's at a better quality setting than
before. We were able to take pictures at will without any
thought to how many or if we want to keep them or not. Later I
just burned them to a CD to give to Sam and Lynn, easy as
that! After the party, we ran by a comic book store in
northern Memphis that I'd never been to before. The place was
small and the people working there were too busy playing video games
to notice that there were actually shoppers in the store.
Their stuff looked fine, and they had a great selection of trade
paperbacks and storage materials, but if the guys aren't the least
bit interested in taking my money then I ain't gonna give it to
them. All in all a textbook example of how to not run a
business. Then, we took in the new Ben Stiller/Jack Black
flick, Envy. I must say I laughed a whole lot... since I'm a
big fan of both of those guys, but the plot of the movie never could
figure out what it was trying to accomplish. After it all
fizzled out I was left with an, "Eh, whatever"
feeling. Funny at times, but not recommended. |

I am on-call today, so that
means I can't venture far from a computer, but that's good news for
gusline.net! I completely redid the guitar's page and I'm
about to do some work on the comics page right now. Also since
today is May 1st, that means that RUSH ONLY month kicks off
today. My plan is to cycle through all of my cds while in the
car, and listen to the several LPs I have in my office. I
can't explain it, but the tunes just sound different on vinyl.
Pretty much all of the LPs are my brother's property, but I'm taking
good care of them.. Sam, I promise! |
